The Board of County Commissioners is comprised of five members elected by districts within the County. Each elected term of office is for a term of 4 years. The Board is the chief policy-making body of Collier County, responsible for providing services to protect the health, safety, welfare and quality of life of the citizens of Collier County. Commissioners are responsible for approving County Government's annual operating budget and capital improvements program and for the appointment of a county administrator to carry out the Board's policies and manage the operations of County Government.
Regular meetings of the Board of County Commissioners are open to the public and are held the second and fourth Tuesdays each month, beginning at 9 a.m. Public petition speakers are limited to ten minutes and general address speakers to 3 minutes. The Commission Chambers and Commissioners' offices are located on the third floor of the Administration Building at 3299 Tamiami Trail East, Suite 303.
Meetings are also aired live on Collier Television CTV and are available online via Video On Demand.
Historical Fact:
The end of the Pioneer era for Southwest Florida came when a winter visitor by the name of Barron Collier came to Useppa Island off the Fort Myers coast in 1911. Finding a special affection for the area, Barron Collier began buying large tracts of land in 1921. In two years he purchased 900,000 acres which eventually resulted in the creation of Collier County. Knowing not to sell the land until it could be improved upon, Barron Collier set the wheels of progress in motion.
