GORE

Reason for Acquisition: The Gore Preserve was acquired to protect existing native plant communities including mixed wetland hardwoods, cypress, hardwood hammocks, and mesic pine flatwood. Preservation of this land helps to ensure existing wildlife corridors connecting the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge, Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park, and Picayune Strand State Forest with the greater Golden Gate Estates area are maintained and available for utilization by a diversity of local species like the endangered Florida panther, Florida black bear, bobcat, white-tailed deer, wild turkey and more. The preserve will also provide passive recreational opportunities to the community in the form of hiking, wildlife viewing, photography, and environmental education. Conservation Collier is actively acquiring parcels within the Dr. Robert H. Gore III Preserve project boundary from willing sellers in order to create a 590.7-acre consolidated preserve area.

Management Goals: Management goals for the property include protection and restoration of the diverse native habitats found throughout the preserve through removal and control of exotic vegetation, monitoring of preserve usage by wildlife species, and providing appropriate nature-based recreational and educational opportunities for citizens and visitors.
